The backpack she is to deliver, they realize too late contains a bomb. The boy tries to warn people away. Ben becomes a target, he tries to stay alive and find the person who gave the bomb to the girl. He realizes there is another bomb and tries to stop more destruction.
The familiar neighborhood seems to have lost all contact with the outside world, and empty mist of evil surrounds them. No outside help is forth coming to help with the destruction and the injured.
On another level, a man and his wife, both scientist have planned a experiment which they believe if its succeeds will make them known the world over. Does that world still exist, and will they ever have contact with it again? Will they live through the disaster? Will there unborn child remain unaffected and healthy?
They are blocked by a fire flame that burns, yet does not spread. In yet another attempt at escaping from the tunnels beneath the ground, they are almost buried in a flood of mud.
The questions in each of the book's characters is their greatest demon when they enter the fog that surrounds them. It seems they are being offered a chance to change a choice they have made in the past.
